Is it a major operation?

The procedure takes 4 to 6 hours and is usually performed under local anesthesia, possibly with light sedation for extra comfort. It is a thorough treatment, but most patients are surprised at how bearable it is. There is some swelling and tenderness during the first few days afterwards — usually well managed with painkillers.
