Orthodontics
A straighter smile, at your own pace
Includes services such as braces, invisible braces and INVISALIGN.
Orthodontics hasn't been just for teenagers with braces for a long time. At Nüvodent, we see as many adults in their thirties, forties or fifties as we do younger patients — people who never had braces as children, or who notice their teeth have shifted over the years. Together, we bring them back into place, with a technique that fits your life.
Invisible with Invisalign, discreet with ceramic brackets, or classic and precise with metal brackets — we look together at what works best for your situation, your schedule and your budget.
No single technique suits every situation. Which one fits you depends on the complexity of your orthodontic issue, your lifestyle and your preferences. We present every option honestly — pros and cons included.
Invisalign — invisible plastic aligners
Transparent, removable trays that you replace every one to two weeks with the next set. Each set moves your teeth a small amount further.
Aesthetics: almost invisible in daily life
Comfort: no brackets rubbing against cheeks or lips
Freedom: you remove them to eat, brush and for special occasions
Discipline: they only work if worn 20–22 hours a day — that requires motivation
Ideal for: adults and motivated teenagers with mild to moderately complex cases
Ceramic brackets — discreet, not invisible
Traditional brackets, but in tooth-coloured ceramic instead of metal. They're far less noticeable than metal brackets, without requiring the discipline that aligners do.
Aesthetics: discreet, barely visible from a distance
Simplicity: no taking in and out as with aligners
Effectiveness: suitable for more complex cases than Invisalign
Ideal for: adults who want discretion but don't want to wear aligners
Classic metal brackets
Modern versions are significantly smaller, smoother and more comfortable than the stereotypes from the 90s. They remain the most versatile option for complex cases.
Precision: maximum control for complex tooth movements
Cost: usually the most accessible option
Continuous effect: work 24/7 without requiring your discipline
Ideal for: teenagers, complex cases, or patients for whom cost is a factor
Your treatment, step by step
Orthodontic treatment usually takes between 6 months (limited corrections) and 24 months (full treatments). Average: 12 to 18 months. We work according to a fixed five-step plan so you always know where you stand.
1. Getting acquainted and examination
An initial consultation of around 45 minutes. We listen to what you want to achieve, examine your teeth and bite, and discuss which techniques suit your situation. No treatment yet — just conversation and assessment.
2. Digital plan and quote
Using a 3D scan (no impression material in the mouth) and X-rays, we create a digital plan of your treatment. With Invisalign, you even see a simulation of how your smile will look after treatment. You receive a written quote with total cost, expected duration and payment options. You decide afterwards — without pressure.
3. Start of treatment
The fitting itself takes 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the technique. It's painless, but in the days that follow you'll feel pressure on the teeth — that's the brace working. After three to five days, that feeling fades.
4. Regular check-ups
Every 6 to 10 weeks, you come in briefly for adjustments — with brackets, we tighten the wires; with Invisalign, you receive the next set of aligners. In between, you can always contact us if something doesn't feel right.
5. End result and retention
When your teeth are in place, we remove the brace or stop the aligners. But there's one crucial step that's often underestimated: retention. Teeth have a tendency to drift back towards their old position. A retainer — fixed or removable — keeps them in place. This part belongs to the investment, not as an option but as a necessity.
Who comes to us?
Adults
The largest group we see: adults who didn't have orthodontics as children, or whose teeth have shifted after years (often following earlier treatment without retention). Also common: women and men who, for a significant life moment — a wedding, a new job, a personal new start — want their smile to match how they feel.
Adult orthodontics is usually quicker than people expect. With Invisalign or lingual braces, treatment is also almost invisible — you can simply go to work without anyone noticing.
Teenagers
The classic group, but the conversation has changed. Teenagers today actively ask for Invisalign because they don't want brackets showing in photos or on social media. Where a brace once "had to be done", it's now a choice with options. We take your son or daughter seriously in that conversation — they're the ones who'll be living with it.
Children (from age 7 to 8)
Sometimes early intervention makes sense. For severely crooked front teeth, a crossbite or a narrow jaw, we can often make substantial corrections at this age with a simple appliance, making a later full treatment lighter — or sometimes unnecessary altogether. Ask about an early consultation.
Why orthodontics at Nüvodent
All options under one roof. Invisalign, ceramic, metal — we're not tied to one technique, and we recommend what suits you, not what we sell most.
Digital approach. 3D scans instead of impression trays. Pre-visualisation of your end result with Invisalign.
One practice for all dental care. If a cavity or check-up comes up during orthodontic treatment, it's handled at the same practice — no looking for new providers.
Multilingual team. Consultations in English, French or Dutch.
Retention included. We treat retention not as an option but as a necessity to protect your investment.
Transparent costs. Written quote in advance, with the option of staged payment.
Duration, costs and reimbursement
Orthodontics is a serious investment, in both time and money. We believe you should know what you're committing to in advance.
Time commitment
Limited correction (e.g. a few front teeth): 4 to 8 months
Full treatment for adults: 12 to 18 months
Complex cases: 18 to 24 months, exceptionally longer
Check-ups: every 6 to 10 weeks, around 20 minutes per appointment
Financial framework
The total cost depends on the technique and the complexity of your situation. General indication:
Classic metal brackets: most accessible option
Ceramic brackets: typically 20–30% more expensive than metal
Invisalign: comparable to or slightly more than ceramic, depending on the number of aligners
At the second appointment (following the digital plan), you receive a written quote with the exact total for your situation. Payment can be spread over the treatment period.
Reimbursement
In Belgium, orthodontics is largely reimbursed by the health insurance fund (mutualiteit) for children and young people under 15 years (provided the application is made before the 15th birthday). For adults, reimbursement from RIZIV/INAMI is limited. However, many supplementary hospitalisation policies and DKV-type policies offer additional coverage for orthodontics — check this in advance with your insurer. We're happy to help with the paperwork.
